30 Links in 30 Days Linkbuilding Campaign - Day 4 - Twitter
The Banality of Twitter
A Twitter account as a suggested link and one of the 30 days of a linkbuilding campaign may appear to be the height of banality. Why? There are several reasons.
Twitter uses Nofollow
Twitter famously uses rel="nofollow" everywhere. However, there are other services which scrape Twitter and do not use nofollow. This is similar to sites which use the Wikipedia database but don't use the nofollow support. This means both that you get traffic (because of the level of site popularity) but you can also pick up some links. The main thing is to keep your name/topic/discussion informative and on-keyword.
Twitter auto-link-shortens
Twitter shortens all links over 30 characters using the bit.ly service. This is sad as sometimes that long url really gives information. However, keep the links short and sweet, and no worries.
Twitter is only one microblogging and status network
Twitter is only one step in microblogging and social network status updates, and should be seen as the (necessary) beginning and not the end of status updates. More will follow, including SEO for Facebook pages and SEO of follow-link microblogging accounts. Oh yes, and of course the SEO of LinkedIn public profiles.
