Today I received an email from Wikitravel with the title An important announcement from Wikitravel.org re SEO. It read as follows...

As from April 12th 2010, all links placed at Wikitravel.org are marked as no follow.

This action has been taken after a long debate in the community, and is designed to lessen the volume of links placed at the site purely for the purpose of search engine optimisation. Dealing with the volume of edits driven by placement of such links, has caused strain on the volunteer team who keep Wikitravel in order. This left us with little choice other than to make the site far less attractive for SEO purposes.
Wikitravel.org has always embraced the business community and will continue to do so. We welcome hotel, restaurant and other travel related listings (see: http://wikitravel.org/en/Welcome,_business_owners ), that are added for the benefit of travellers. There is no change to this policy, other than the action taken to discourage SEO-driven placements.

We would be very grateful if you circulated the news of this development throughout your organisation, and amongst your clients if appropriate.

Best regards

The Wikitravel Administration Team
http://www.wikitravel.org

Well, there you have it. The great unwashed SEO masses have ruined yet another wonderful source of SEO due to the basic tragedy of the commons problem. Although this pales next to things like Global Warming, it is yet another reminder of how the humans are likely doomed.

Wikidweb is one of a few actual web directories that we suggest our clients use in their linkbuilding campaigns. Why? Several reasons.

Why use Wikidweb?

First, it is a basic wiki using WikiMedia, the wiki software that runs Wikipedia--namely it is easy to use.

Second, you do the editing, not some anonymous (or non-existent) bot or black hat fiend who has somehow gotten in charge of a section to edit, or some other know-everything who doesn't want to soil their precious list with your unimportant entry. Yeah, you know who I mean.

Third, this site has real potential as it seems (currently) to have little spam, while having a decent amount of traffic (24,220 in Alexa and home page has PageRank 4 as of 2009-11-02).

Fourth, its a wiki, therefore there is wiki-fun to be had!

The value is there in this site--not so much in the short term (though one-way links from legitimate sites are always of value), as in the medium and long term. And that, folks, is how we do our linkbuilding. These are medium and long-term strategies and tactics.

Wikitravel - Follow links and high PageRank

Wikitravel is a fantastic resource and for the engaged wiki editor a myriad of opportunities await. Many pages have high page rank and indeed links are "follow" (brought to you by Eva, the Identi.ca developer so the same thinking on links holds).

Cowboy up your Wiki profile and start editing

Of course as a wiki this is a self-managing community and spamming (as in most sites beyond simple social media which is almost definitionally spam) should be vigilantly avoided. Be a good wiki community editor and create valuable links and you will get both traffic and some nice nice PageRank linkjuice.

Travel? But I live at Home...

Yes, but your home is a travel destination for somebody, actually for many.
